We have plants! In all my years of having a garden, this is the first year that I’ve done everything in pots. In an attempt to keep my black lab from eating my plants, everything I grow this year will come out of an orange colored pot.

My daughter had been learning about growing plants at school so we decided to continue the learning process at home. We had attempted to grow some plants from seed using peat pots and they were doing great, until I left them in the sun too long and fried the little seedlings. That’s when I remember we had the Miracle-Gro Gro-ables and we tried those instead. We planted three varieties: basil, button lettuce and dill.

My daughter’s work has paid off as we have plants! The lettuce is doing well considering the temperatures in Kansas have been so extreme. Last Sunday we had a high of 45 degrees and this Sunday, we were in triple digits. Brecken was super excited since this is the first time she’s really planted a vegetable AND taken care of it. It’s fun to watch her water it and she even will move the pot to make sure it’s always in the sun.

Miracle-Gro Gro-ables have been a great way to introduce her to vegetable gardening. Not only was she involved from the very start, it’s also introducing her to foods that she typically doesn’t eat. She tells me quite often she doesn’t like “salad” but I have a feeling after harvesting her first head of lettuce, she’ll have a new favorite food. Plus, a little ranch dressing doesn’t hurt. :)
